Evaluation

The aim of the brief was to analyse posters and for this task we had to design and create a unique original film poster.

The primary research was that I took portrait photographs using a DSLR camera and took various shot types and angles. I imported the photos from the SD card of the DSLR camera and saved them to my external drive and carefully selected one. I then went on to do secondary research and looked at the Avengers End Game poster which had an Action, Fantasy genre. We also looked at a poster of Maleficent and spoke about the mise en scene and the genre. We denotated and connotated these Fantasy Action posters. When we analysed the posters, we looked at Foreground, Midground and Background. We also discussed the conventions of Action genre which was showing on the poster. The colour, the positioning, the costume, the setting background, there were shadows and layers of action. This reflects the story and the image of the film being portrayed by the poster. This helped me immensely to developed my ideas for my poster.

What helped me make my decision is that my portrait which I carefully selected. I am holding a phone in my hand and I wanted to use this as my genre to connect it to a technical action & adventure film related to technology.

In this current climate, we hear a lot about people hacking into people’s computers, phones and I thought that this would be interesting. This would appeal to a large target audience aged 15+.

The research informed me because it had a certain layout and format I was able to follow, various colours, creative titles, various kinds of shaders and an abstract background.

We completed a workshop on photoshop. I imported my portraits in photoshop and manipulated the images. I learnt how to use and add layers and I imported copyright backgrounds.  When I looked at many other posters online and looked at foreground, background and what the different settings are like. This helped me to progress my idea. I saw that all  techno action films had these binary code backgrounds.

I think my poster is very professional due to the background image and the binary. It looks very similar to an official film poster and I was able to capture the details of the film posters and the end results came out well. I manipulated this in photoshop and used layers to archive the final result.

What could’ve gone better is that If I could add more blending to it. This would’ve made it look a lot more professional than it is.

Discussing with my pairs, they gave me feedback saying that the poster would’ve improved if I added more images revealing what the film’s setting.
